It seems some of you are curious about how I happened to have my picture taken with Peter Jennings on the set of "World News Tonight." So, I'll share the story with you.

Those of you who are Evansville residents may recall there was a shake-up of local affiliates many years ago. While it is true that Channel 7 is now a Fox affiliate, it started out as an ABC affiliate. During the years that I anchored the 6 and 10pm news, it was an ABC affiliate.

It was also during that time that Randy and I had the privilege of taking some folks from home on a tour of New York City every year. The trip was always capped off by a game at Yankee Stadium to cheer for our hometown boy Don Mattingly.

One year we contacted ABC to see if Peter Jennings would be willing to tape a news promotion with me while we were in New York. Lo and behold he said yes! I was thrilled, of course. Peter was always my favorite network anchor. I thought he would dash in, tape the promo with me, politely shake my hand and show me the door.

I showed up for the taping with Randy and our daughter Erin, who I think was 9 or 10 at the time. He showed us all over the news department, introduced us to everyone, and showed genuine interest not only in us, but in our little girl! He made us feel so comfortable and welcome. Then get this...he invited us BACK that same night to watch the newscast from the studio! He sat us on the end of the desk while he did the news. It was an amazing experience.

Isn't it great when our heroes turn out to be genuinely nice people? I was deeply saddened when Peter Jennings lost his battle with cancer. He was a true gentleman and ultimate professional. The broadcast industry needs more people like Peter Jennings. Of course...it has Randy Moore!
